Google Product Search has gone through several changes and enhancements in the last year. This past week, we’ve seen that the Google guys aren’t anywhere near stopping the upgrades. Now, users can access product reviews, YouTube videos, and other information from a single page known as the product page.
Because users appreciate all the information they can get when it comes to purchasing products, Google wants product pages to be as useful as possible. That’s why they’re asking for our help. All U.S. merchants must update their product pages by making a small change to their data feed for any electronics, media, and book categories. Now it’s required that product identifiers, unique to each particular product, like the ISBN, Brand, MPN, GTIN, UPC, and EAN are all included in the feed.
For those of you unsure as to where to find the unique product identifier information, just take a look at the Product Search product pages under the Technical Specifications, Tracks, Details, Overview section, depending on the product category. Google has listed all the required identifiers you’ll need to include in their Help Center.
If you don’t update your product data feed, you will likely see a dramatic drop in traffic and sales stemming from Product Search, so it’s wise to make this small change by the end of August. Don’t worry; any other category won’t be affected. However, that doesn’t mean unique identifiers won’t be needed for those other categories in the future, so while you’re at it, update everything you can.
