Picasa and Blogger Might Be Rebranded Into Google Photos & Google Blogs

Looks like Google wants to add its name to some of the services that, although the world knows are Google products, do not have the “Google” name added to them.

Tech Blog Mashable reports that the first in the line are Picasa and Blogger. Both of them might have their names changed to Google Photos and Google Blogs respectively. This is expected to happen within the next 30 to 45 days according to Mashable’s sources.

Google plans to launch Google+ publicly by July 31 so this move of rebranding Picasa and Blogger could have something to do with that. Picasa integration is already there in Google+ and there is every possibility that Blogger integration in some form hits Google+ soon.

This isn’t the first time Google would be doing it. In case you don’t know, both Picasa and Blogger were sites that were acquired by Google some years ago. In the past, Google’s policy has been to rebrand most of its acquisitions. It did that for Writely (became Google Docs), GrandCentral (became Google Voice) and some others. Popular services like YouTube were left untouched though (and so were Picasa and Blogger).

I think the rebranding makes sense considering Google efforts to dominate the social networking space through Google+. Both Picasa and Blogger have huge social aspects to them so bringing them under one umbrella could be a wise move. What do you think?

Actually I start to worry that Google may have the same situation as Microsoft. Although it looks so reasonable for them to add all their line-ups into Google+, it may have a risk that Google will be challenged with Anti-Monopoly Law.
