google voice logoOne of the Google products I really wish is made available internationally is Google Voice. I know, there are workarounds but I am talking the legit way. Yeah, it’s not easy, Google has to work with carriers for that…I know all that. But this service has so many amazing features that it’s just hard to let go of the thought..especially when you’ve got the tech world talking about it now and then. This post is about to do the same.

Recently, Google introduced number portability in Google Voice. That means Google Voice users in the US can now port their existing cell phone number to Google Voice. As Google mentions in their official announcement post, this was a frequently requested feature. And that’s understandable considering the way Google Voice works.

Engadget was the first to notice this Google Voice feature. The image below was originally posted there. At that time, Google said that it was only testing it with a few users. But within 3 or 4 days, Google announced that it has launched the service.

In order to get started with number porting, you would need to go to the Settings page in your Google Voice account and click on the Change/Port option beside your Google Voice number.

As you must have seen in a screenshot above, the cost of porting your number is $20. Google says that you might also incur charges from your carrier so you will need to check on that.

This Help Center article has everything you need to know about number porting to Google Voice.

So, are you a Google Voice user? How has it been working for you? Will you consider porting your number to Google Voice?

Love the idea of porting to Google Voice if they had their own phone service. Outside of that porting is best for those who have ipad item.
