Google Docs is a great way to keep your working documents accessible at all times, and also to collaborate on documents with others. We’ve discussed ways Google Docs makes collaboration better recently, but sometimes part of “collaboration” means making a document or information accessible to people you don’t know (yet) using the Internet. Being able to publish a Google document directly onto your website in a fast and easy way makes this process… well… fast and easy.

2 Steps to publishing Google Docs to our website

There are two types of Google Docs you can publish on your website: Spreadsheets, and presentations. Publishing in done in literally two easy steps:

  1. First, you need to make your document available by publishing it on the web through Google Docs. You can do this by clicking on the ‘share’ button, ‘publish as a webpage’, and follow the steps.
  2. The next thing you need to do, is go to Google Web Elements for spreadsheets, or Presentation Elements for presentations, paste the link to your published document in the URL field, set the parameters you want for your website, and you will not only see a preview of your document as it will look on your site, you also get the element code you can use to publish the document directly to your web page.

4 Reasons you want to publish Google Docs on your website

  1. Artists and photographers can publish a presentation featuring their work on a website, while keeping a easy access to the original Document in their Google docs. This allows for easy updating of your portfolio anywhere you are.
  2. If you need the clear and easy overview spreadsheets give you, then directly publishing a Google Docs spreadsheet it far easier than first creating a screen short of your information and posting it on your website as a picture. This comes in handy for schedules (schools, speaking engagements, touring schedules, etc), or financial information (fundraisers, etc).
  3. You can make changes to your published information using Google Docs, and publishing it online is as easy as copying and pasting a simple code.
  4. If want to distribute, or give a preview, if presentations you give then you can publish your presentation directly from Google Docs on a website, and make it accessible to anyone. This could lead to more invitations for talks, or provide access to your presentation for people who came to see you speak.
