I recently requested the removal of a few web pages from Google as some minorly personal information was viewable on them (entirely my own fault, I'd misread some Ts and Cs). As I had access to those pages it was easy enough to edit them so I could od a removal request pointing out the info sort that side of it out (admittedly after a lot of research as to how to get it done) and most of the requests have been granted and the caches cleared. However using that same personal info as a search term lists those pages still, just minus cache or reference to the info in the search result or page itself.

I know it takes until google crawls again for that to change, as it has to find new info on the page to make its new search terms, but does anyone know roughly how long that takes?

Hi Bruce,

Unfortunately I'm Google Tutor not Trueswitch Tutor ;)

I haven't used Trueswitch so I really don't know the answer to your question, I'm sure they can help you though.

You could simply email your contacts from Gmail and let them know of the switch.

I am trying to convert to Gmail from my Comcast email I have used for over 10 years now. I used the Trueswitch application to import all my email and contacts from Comcast but now how can I notify all my 500+ contacts of my new email address. If there was a step in the Trueswitch process, I must have missed it because I have already pinged a few of my contacts and they have not received an email from my Gmail address informing them that I have changed to Gmail. If i did skip something, how can I go back and make sure this task is followed through?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Bruce

Hi Vypers,

I'm not sure how this works on a Mac, but these instructions

http://hathology.com/how-to-setup-a-local-dns-host-file-on-mac-os-x/

show you how to open the file. If you see entries regarding Google in there, they should be removed.

If you are unsure of what you are doing, be sure to save a copy of the orginial before you edit.

I don't know if you are on Vista or not but I'm betting you can't edit the file because you are not the Admin (or the PC thinks you are not). This seems to be a good solution:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923947

Unfortunately, this is about all the help I can give on this issue. It will be fixed if you fix your host file, beyond that I don't know what to tell you to try. There are other PC forums out there though that know this stuff.

And I can tell one thing -- you should not have to buy any software to fix it. There are many tools that claim to, and they might, but fixing your host file should be very easy, if it isn't, it is really in your best interest to find out why.

Many many thanks for your advice. I think we are 95% there. I went into the hosts file and it was massively attacked with over 60 lines of google related addresses etc. My problem now is that despite many efforts I cannot save the edited hosts file. I think that I do but when I go in I see the original unedited version coming up. Any advice as how to save or effectively edit the hosts file will sve this frustration. I am really sorry I am a pain, but I spent 7 hours researching as to how to save it but all the solutions do not work. My sincerely grateful thanks in anticipation of your reply.

this sounds like something with your host file which is common for malware to fool with.

your hosts file should look something like it does in the first pic in this post:

http://blog.priveonlabs.com/sec_blog.php?c=1&more=1&p=51&pb=1&tb=1

if it has extra entries as shown in the second pic, something added them, usually malware and this can keep you from accessing certain sites.

all you have to do is remove the entries and save the file. just in case you have a legit reason for some of those entries (not common) you should save a copy of the original host file just in case you need to restore it.
