Delegating Your Gmail Account To Someone Else

Email delegation is nothing new and people who get tons of emails each day understand how important it is to even delegate something as personal as email to someone else. Also, if you own multiple email accounts, you could have some of them delegated to other people so that you don’t have to keep checking all of them every day.

Now, Gmail always had this email delegation feature for Google Apps users. They could grant other people access to their gmail accounts and have them read, and reply to emails on their behalf. Recently, Gmail introduced this nifty feature for regular Gmail users around the world.

The good thing about this feature is that the person, who is accessing your email account, cannot change your account settings or the password. So you still are in control.

To activate this feature, click on Settings at the top in your Gmail, and under Accounts and Import, you should find an option that says Grant access to your account.

You can click on Add another account, and enter the email address of the person whom you want to grant access to your Gmail.

He or she will get a verification email, through which he could accept your request.

After the person has accepted your requested, he needs to log out and log in again. Once he does that, he should see a small arrow pointing south at the top where his email address is displayed. Clicking on that arrow will show up your account. An example of that is shown in the screenshot below.

When that person replies to an email that showed up in your inbox, the recipient of that email will see that he has replied on your behalf.

So that’s how this Gmail delegation thing works. If you are a Gmail user, and get a number of emails every day, or have separate Gmail accounts you don’t want to handle anymore, then this feature will sure come in handy.
