Chrome for a Cause

So, did you know you can “chrome for a cause?” Well, you can and we think it is pretty cool. Throughout 2010, Chrome has been art of plenty of fun, inventive, explorative, and interesting projects and events. Now, the guys at Google can add charitable to that list.
Wondering what we’re talking about? The guys at Google have invited Chrome users to help out. The way they’ve asked is really pretty unique. Chrome users should be able to donate their opened tabs in the browser in order to drive a charitable gift of $1 million. During this event, the Chrome users participating were able to raise 60,599,541 tabs for charity.
There was plenty of freedom involved, too. Every Chrome user was able to decide which causes their particular tabs would support. Doing so determined how the $1 million would be spread out. Here’s how it ended up breaking down:
- Planting trees in the Atlantic Forest – $245,278
- Building freshwater wells in developing nations – $232,791
- Building shelters for impoverished families in Latin America – $112,078
- Vaccinations against meningitis in Africa – $267,336
- Publishing books by local writers and donating them in Africa and Asia – $142,518
All the donations will be made by the end of this year – good things since we’ve only got a day left!
We’re wondering what they’ll do for 2011. Happy New Year!
