We thought the days of the phone booth were long gone, now that almost everyone in the nation seems to have a cell phone of sorts these days. However, hot on the heels of announcing that Google Voice is now being integrated into Gmail (see our latest article here), the guys over at Google really want to get your attention – with Google phone booths. And no, we are not kidding.
And we’re also not kidding when we tell you to imagine those charming red phone booths that are throwbacks to days gone by. You can still see them here and there dotted throughout various areas of the United Kingdom. Seems like history really always does repeat itself. However, it has to be said – these phone booths are a great idea.
Google announced that these red Google Voice phone booths will begin to pop up in airports and on university campuses throughout the US. Simply step into one of these booths and make both domestic and international phone calls absolutely free of charge! Wondering why they’re doing all this?
To get you hooked on Google Voice, of course.
The aim is to allow people to get used to the idea of Google Voice, and for anyone who uses a Google booth to see how the voice quality compares to alternatives, such as old-fashioned landlines and cell phones. They haven’t announced how many phone booths they plan to install but we’ll be finding out for sure in the next couple of weeks.
Here’s to hoping one of them pops up onto a campus or an airport near you!
