When you are planning to visit a city, apart from things like tourist destinations, things to do and eat and other such stuff, one important thing that you should be checking is the weather of that place; both the current weather and the forecast over the next week or so.

Google Maps has now introduced what they call a “weather layer” on the maps that enables users to quickly take a look at the weather conditions of a destination, right on the map.

You can activate the weather layer using the corresponding widget that can be accessed from the top right in Google Maps.

The data is sourced from weather.com, the premier weather site on the web. Once you click on the weather widget, it quickly pops up weather details, both on the map as well as in the left sidebar. The temperatures can be checked in degree celsius or farenheit, and even the wind speed in a particular place can be checked.

When you click on that small weather pop-up over a city, it shows up the current weather conditions as well as the forecast for that city over the next few days.

As you see in the screenshot above, the forecasts are neatly displayed, and you can check the hourly and 10-day data as well.

Overall, it’s a nice addition to Google Maps. What do you say?
