One of my favorite OS X Dashboard widgets is the Callwave SMS widget, which lets me send text messages to people around the world–free!

However, I don’t always use my Mac (I bring my subnotebook when traveling because it’s lighter). I was quite disappointed that CallWave didn’t have a Windows version at first, but now they seem to be giving their users more options. You can now install a local version for the Yahoo! Widget Engine (formerly Konfabulator). And you can also install it as a Google Gadget for your Google Personalized Homepage.

Simply head on to www.callwave.com and click the “Add Google Gadget” link. You will be led to the Google IG “add module” page, and you are asked to confirm installation. Click the Add to Google button to install.

Once installed, you first have to register for an account. Key in your mobile number (which will appear on each message you send), country, and desired PIN.

You will then be sent a verification code on your cellphone, which you have to input to verify your account. Once verified, you can already log in using your mobile number and PIN.

You can then start sending messages to mobile phones around the world. Just input the mobile number, country, carrier (if country is US or Canada) and your message.

The gadget will give you a confirmation if the message has already been sent.

Some gripes though: The Google Gadget version doesn’t support phonebooks, like the the OS X Dashboard widget version. And there’s no Gadget version for the Google Desktop, which would be great for those who would rather run it off the desktop, but not on Yahoo! Widget Engine.

[...] There are a handful of free SMS services out there, but CallWave is my favorite. You can either install it as an OS X Dashboard widget, a Yahoo Widget Engine (Konfabulator) widget, or even as a Google Gadget on your Google Homepage (instructions here). If you use Windows Vista, you can install it as a standalone Vista gadget. [...]

Depends on the recipient’s plan. From where I come from the SMS recipient doesn’t pay a thing. But some carriers will charge for received messages. Better check with the person (or the carrier) you’ll be sending SMS to first.
