Gmail LogoThere is no doubt that Gmail has some unique features which no other email client can boast of and hence it is inching faster everyday towards becoming the most popular web based email program.

Apart from the well known features of Gmail like filtering, keyboard shortcuts etc, there are also many hidden features which may not have reached all the Gmail users till now. Keeping that in mind, today I’ll discuss t 3 such tips, which not every Gmail user is  familiar with.

1. Gmail Inbox RSS Feed

Yes, that’s right. You can get the RSS feed of your Gmail inbox in the same manner like you get feeds of  different websites in your RSS feed reader. The feed URL that you would need is http://mail.google.com/mail/feed/atom

The only drawback here is that the feed requires authentication and hence it is not viewable in some feed readers which includes Google Reader. You can view it in desktop based RSS readers like FeedDemon.

2. You get 2 email addresses automatically  !

Do you know that if you’ve got an email address as abc@gmail.com, you automatically get another email address which is abc@googlemail.com ? And yes, it’s the same as abc@gmail.com.

If you think deep, by now you must have figured out the advantage of having 2 email addresses in the same Gmail account. Yes, you can use one of the addresses just for some close friends and filter their emails easily, from the huge number of emails which you might be getting everyday.

3. You get unlimited email addresses !

In fact it’s not just the googlemail address which you get. Your email address abc@gmail.com is same as abc+def@gmail.com, abc+defg@gmail.com, ……so on and so forth.

Also abc@gmail.com is same as a.bc@gmail.com,a.b.c@gmail.com ….. so on and so forth. So next time when you are registering on a site and you need to give them their email address, but you suspect they might spam you then just give one of the above email addresses and create a filter for the email which comes from that address to skip the inbox and get archived. Cool, isn’t it ?

I hope you like the aforementioned tips and they help you  in managing your Gmail more effectively.

Actually, I don’t think abc@gmail.com is the same as abc.def@gmail.com (at least not from what I tried), but abc@gmail.com is the same as a.b.c@gmail.com, a.bc@gmail.com ab.c@gmail.com, and even a…..bc@gmail.com (basically, you can add as many dots in your user name as you wish)
