Google Building Maker, which was launched recently by Google, lets you add 3D buildings to Google Earth easily.

Since Google is keen on adding more and more 3D structures to Google Earth and also maintain their accuracy at the same time, it decided that crowdsourcing the task was the best way forward.

The tool is web based and hence you don’t need to download anything. However, it would require the Google Earth plugin to function, which you’d already have if you have Google Earth installed (Mac users would need to download the plugin directly).

You can choose a building and then use a combination of aerial photos and 3D shapes to create a 3D model of that building. Editing and modification is done within Google SketchUp, Google’s 3D modeling tool.

Once you are done, you need to submit it to Google team for review. If they find it good, it gets added to Google Earth and you get credited for the same. Currently, it works for 50 cities and you can expect more cities to be added soon.
