Remember the Quicksilver-like Google Quick Search Box for the Mac OS X that blew me away a few weeks ago? Now you can get the same thing for Windows. Well, kind of. I say “kind of” because you need Google Toolbar to get Quick Search.

You see, Google has bundled the new Quick Search Box for Windows with Google Toolbar 6. So if you install Google Toolbar 6 for Internet Explorer (WHY?!), you get the awesome search box previously available to OS X users only.

The Windows version of Quick Search Box is much lighter on features than the Mac version. For example, you can’t drill down into any search items the same way the beta of Quick Search Box for Mac does. In fact, it really can’t do all that much at the moment.

However, Quick Search Box for Windows is a very simple, no-nonsense search box. It searches the web, and it searches for and launches applications; it’s extremely fast and responsive, and it doesn’t use more than 15MB. Some users not that Quick Search Box for Windows is even more stable than its Mac counterpart, weirdly.

Remember Launchy? Quick Search Box is just like that. It also acts a lot like Google Desktop. So I can’t say I’m that impressed. What I’d like to see is a stand-alone Quick Search Box application that doesn’t come with Google Toolbar or Google Desktop. Or if they’re going to keep this tied up to Google Toolbar, then have it work on Firefox, please.

But if you use and like Internet Explorer, then Google Toolbar actually adds the Chrome start page to IE. That’s actually something I like.

To install Google Toolbar 6, you need to fire up Internet Explorer, and go to this page. You have to use IE, because if you’re on another browser, you’ll just get redirected to Google Toolbar 5.
