@Abhijeet Mukherjee: No, you're really mistaken here.
abc+def@gmail.com is defnitely not the same as abc+defg@gmail.com. You are right, they do both get into your inbox. The trick however is that you can filter on 'def' and you can filter on 'defg', so then you can label them automatically or even have them bypass your inbox.

This is not the case with the use of dots. namesurname@gmail.com is the exact same address as name.surname@gmail.com and they cannot be filtered separately.

@Gmail tricks - It's the same. Test it on your own gmail address by sending mail to both the forms of your gmail id. Each time the mail will land in your own inbox.

name.id@gmail.com is not the same as name@gmail.com

However name+id@gmail.com *IS* the same as name@gmail.com. So you can give out a different email address to all your bills, social networks, etc and receive them in the same inbox.

Actually, I don't think abc@gmail.com is the same as abc.def@gmail.com (at least not from what I tried), but abc@gmail.com is the same as a.b.c@gmail.com, a.bc@gmail.com ab.c@gmail.com, and even a.....bc@gmail.com (basically, you can add as many dots in your user name as you wish)
