There are many websites which host malwares but camouflage themselves as nice and authentic sites in order to trap the visitors. Google Safe Browsing tool is a tool developed by Google which helps you to test a website which you think may not be authentic, before you visit the website and get infected with malware.

In order to check it, you just need to type the following in your browser address bar - http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=website url. For example we checked our site by going to http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=googletutor.com

Google Safe Browsing Tool

The safe browsing tool returns the following information about the site.

1. Current listing status of the site

It tells whether the site is listed as suspicious in the Google index.

2. Google’s previous visit to the site

This gives an analysis of Google’s visit to the site over the past 90 days and reveals if it found any page as malicious or installed without user content.

3. Indirect role of site in distributing malwares

Google’s safe browsing tool goes one step ahead and also tells if the site has functioned as an intermediary in the infection of any other sites.

4.  Any malware hosted on site

If the site has deliberately or unwittingly hosted malware in the past 90 days, then you’ll get that report in this tool.

Google has also shown an example of a site which has malware. You can check it here - http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=http://malware.testing.google.test/testing/malware/. It’s a test site so you can safely click and check it.

It’s a nice idea but I don’t think it compares well to McAfee’s free SiteAdvisor

    http://www.siteadvisor.com/

Which has plug-ins for IE and Firefox and displays red/yellow/green icons next to every page that you search. If you want more info on a given page, you cal click the icons to read the McAfee report.

If you try to go to a RED site, you will be take to a SiteAdvisor screen recommending that you don’t proceed. Of course, it’s up to you whether you heed their advice or not.
