Google code is an initiative, primarily aimed at helping developers and webmasters by providing them a host of tools, guides and services which would further help them in their projects.

The good thing about Google code is that it also offers a lot of things for the average non-geeky kind of guy who wants to dive into the world of technology and wants to learn how things like HTML, AJAX, MySQL, Web security work. The Google Code University has some very good tutorials and resources such as videos, lectures and a lot more. It also has a feature called ‘ CS Curriculum Search ‘ where you can search teaching materials that have been published to the web by faculty from Computer Science ( CS ) departments around the world. You can refine your search to display just lectures, assignments or reference materials for a set of courses.

For example, in the screenshot below, I was trying learn about Web Security in Google Code.

Another Google Code feature for the purpose of learning is the Google Doctype. As it says: ” Google Doctype is an open encyclopedia and reference library. Written by web developers, for web developers. It includes articles on web security, JavaScript DOM manipulation, CSS tips and tricks, and more. The reference section includes a growing library of test cases for checking cross-browser and cross-platform compatibility.

However I have found that not only it has resources for experienced web developers, it has some pretty cool HOW-TO articles for those who want to venture out in the world of Javascript and CSS.

So whether you are a web developer, an aspiring web designer or someone who wants to enhance his knowledge in the field of HTML, CSS etc, I am sure you’ll like the aforesaid initiatives of Google Code.
