GTA 4 and Google Maps Mashup
Grand Theft Auto 4 is a big game. Within the game world lies an area as large as New York City. In fact, the in-game city is reportedly based on New York and surrounding areas and there is stuff to discover everywhere. Because of this, you might need a little help finding your way around.
One very useful resource that I have come across is this great Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City map from IGN . Unlike normal game maps, it uses the easy-to-use Google Maps interface on top of a high-res version of the Liberty City street map.
Not only can you pan around at a high level of detail (about as good as taking a 10x magnifying glass to a paper map you might own), but you can enable or disable different locations based on types of content! A lot of these markers were added by IGN, but they let you add your own as well, if you find something cool, like a sniper rifle or tank.
Google Maps is traditionally used for finding a location around town or in another city. But did you know Google allows programmers to use their maps interface with different datasets? When this is done it is typically called a mashup, since it uses two different data sources together to create a new, unique use.
So what are you waiting for, see if there’s something you missed! That’s exactly what I’m going to do. I just got GTA4 and my Playstation 3 is ready to go!
