Although you often hear me pandering on the likes of the Digg, StumbleUpon and Mixx communities, I’ve decided to post regularly here at Google Tutor to talk about Google’s role in social media.

How can a company such as Google sit idly by while other social media sites take off? Easy. They aren’t.

Robert Scoble had an interesting piece on Google, revealing that Google’s most sticky (time spent on) site is Orkut.

Over the next several posts, I’ll be covering each of these pieces of Google’s stake in social media in greater detail.So, let’s review:

BloggerBlog platform? Check. (Blogger)

OrkutSocial network? Check. (Orkut)

JaikuMicroblogging? Check. (Jaiku)

FeedburnerRSS? Check. (Feedburner)

Google ReaderRSS Feed Reader? Check. (Google Reader, not to mention sharing within Google Reader).

OpenSocialSocial Network Open Development Framework? Check. (OpenSocial)

Google TalkReal-time Chat? Check. (Google Talk)

YoutubeViral Videos? Check. (YouTube)

Google Dice

The only piece that is clearly sticking out is Social News. However the Google Toolbar has Google Dice, a similar function to StumbleUpon.

Also, with Google currently sitting on over $13 billion in cash, how many Digg’s (current price tag – $300 million) could they buy without breaking a sweat?

    No! you may have “stumbled” into a perfect purchase for Google. Now introducing Google Stumble. Should they roll the dice? Not sure if I would want that to happen or not. I have never looked at dice before though.

    $300 million for digg thats retarded, ok yea its a very popular site, but unless i am mistaken its only source of revenue is from advertising. Since online advertising is starting to come under more fire for how effective it really is(talking about banners and google style adsense displays, i dont see how anyone in their right mind would buy digg for that much.

    I mean think about your self, when you browse websites do you pay attention to or have trained your brain to ignore ads and just focus on the content, even if you look at the ads are they going to cause you to buy.

    $300 mm just more unsubstantiated claims

    Awesome article. Also As mentioned in the above comment by Jeff he is right. A lot of people use the Adblock extension for Firefox to block out ads anyway. Or quite simply, a lot of people don’t click or look at ads.

    I will admit though, I do click on someone’s advertisements if I like their site just to help them out.
