Google imitates AOL - flattery or flop-in-waiting?

newgoogle_hilite.jpg

I was alerted to this one by Valleywag (I personally don’t see it on my screen yet). Google is apparently imitating a failed AOL search experiment by having video and product results appear in a right-hand bar. Valleywag has commented that this is identical to AOL’s now abandoned FullView.

The question is - is this a limited experiment on a small number of screens to test new layout possibilities or are they starting to roll this out to everyone?

I like the idea of separating the videos from the main search results. Having them all thrown together made the search list look very messy and cluttered. This way, everything looks a little neater and more orderly.

nice catch Mark! however this just looks like another test of the much anticipated Universal Search to me.

and something failing for AOL, isn’t much to take stock in these days ;)

good find though, I’m off to see if I can make it show up now!

I wonder how this would effect the embedded adsense search.

Aaron, I assume you mean Google’s Custom Search? If so, I’d expect to see the same thing happen a while after they finally settle on what Universal is going to be, unless of course (I hope!!) you are using it to search only your own site like we do here.
