Remember our post a few days ago about Google Suggest? Well, it turns out you don’t have to actually browse to Google Labs’ Suggest page to get this feature.

If you’re running the latest version of the popular FireFox open source web browser along with Google’s toolbar, then you already have the power of Google Suggest right on your browser toolbar. This is turned on by default, but if you’re not sure, open the preferences for Google Toolbar, and be sure you checked the “suggest popular queries as you type” box.

The search bar at the upper right is for Google, by default. And if you’ve already been doing extensive searches, it also supports a brief history of some of your searches. It makes suggestions while you type. Here, for example, I type in a.

As expected, I see a brief list of searches I’ve made starting with A. But if I add in another letter, say m but I haven’t made any searches starting with that yet, Firefox defaults to offering suggestions by Google Suggest. This is marked by the “suggestion” label at the right.

If your query has both historical and suggested keywords, then you can clearly see that these are separated by a line, with the lower part marked by the “suggestion” label.

Calculation or conversion results also show up as suggestions. Type “2*3=” or “1 gallon to liters” and see what you get.

Not a comment about this specific post. Just wanted to let you know your site’s rapidly becoming my favorite! I’ve also always been into ’search’, i.e. how it works, formulating queries to get the best results etc.
Never ceases to amaze me, how people can have Google right at their fingertips, and yet still can’t find what they’re looking for!
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard the comment “I’ve been trying to find that for months, how did you DO that?”, after a 0.03 second search. HAH, I thought I was pretty good at it till I found YOUR site lol! Keep up the good work, your site ROCKS!
Oh yeah, not to mention how much you’ve helped me improve my own search capabilities. Sorry I don’t have any tips for you today, haven’t read the entire site, so anything I give you, you likely already have ;o)
    Regards,
    Dave
