So you got yourself a nifty Google Calendar account and got it shared and setup to be the central hub of coordinating and managing events for you and your group. Productivity has increased and overall, it’s a good experience especially since you are able to keep tabs on your Google Calendar via e-mail alerts everytime an update occurs.

However, it is a truth that you cannot always access your e-mail let alone read your newest unread messages in your inbox, especially when you’re mobile. Here’s a simple solution to getting updates while on-the-go even without getting yourself one of those Blackberry-type gadgets: Setup your Google Calendar to send you an SMS alert. Google calendar will then text you whenever you have an upcoming event or event invitation.

Here again are the simple steps to activate this cool feature of Google Calendar:

1. Click on “Settings” at the top of any Google Calendar page, then select the “Notifications” tab.

2. Select your country from the “Country” pull-down menu.

3. In the “Phone number” field, enter your phone number.

4. Select your carrier from the drop-down menu, if requested. If the “See Help Center for supported providers” message is displayed, leave the field as is.

5. Click on the “Send Verification Code” button and wait for a text message to be sent to your phone.

6. Once you receive this message, enter the code you received in your text message into the “Verification code” box and click on the “Finish setup” button.

To find out which mobile providers are supported by Google Calendar, check out this list sorted by country names alphabetically.

To guide you through the entire process, here’s a screencast on how to get this going (I’m currently having problems embedding the video, so I hope a link to it would be all right).
