Why you should NOT be using blogger/blogspot for your blog
Seriously, if you take your blog seriously, you don’t want to be in this mix –
Three out of every four unique Blogspot.com URLs that appeared in the top 50 results for commercial queries were spam, the study said. Blogspot is the hosting site for Google’s blogging service. Blogs created for marketing purposes are sometimes referred to as “splogs.”

Not to mention that half the time there is some technical problem going on at blogger… they aggravate me daily.
I would have to disagree with this one.
The blogger platform is a wonderful tool for those that are interested in starting a blog. I did; but when it becomes a passion and you commit to it, then buying a domain name and getting a hosting package is definitely the way to go.
The benefits of blogger? Google instantly sees/crawls your posts for entry into the index. If you post something and the engines never see it, did it even exist?
Oh, and another thing, without having experienced the down side of blogger (thank you Paula), you wouldn’t truly appreciate your blog!
Hmmmnnn… interesting … you always have me thinking…
Stephen,
I could give a lot of reasons why blogger is the worst choice, but I don’t have time (might do a post on that another day) so I’ll just rebutt your two main points -
1) Blogger is good for starting out.
Ok, but WordPress.com is an even better product — WITHOUT the connotation of being a spam network. Why would you ever knowingly join a netowrk that the engines know is loaded with spam?
I agree, that your own domain would be even better, in that case install WordPress on your own domain and go, that’s what we do here.
2) Google instantly crawling isn’t due to it being Blogger…er…ok perhaps just slightly BUT any blogging platform is going to ping and pinging is what gets you indexed quickly.
ALSO, you shouldn’t be choosing your platform on which gets you indexed quickest anyway. You should be choosing the platform on which makes you the best blogger, and just about every platform is better than Blogger *without the spam problems they have*.
I should add that if you don’t want to move off Blogger (I know how that goes!) you can do yourself a world of good by getting your own domain instead of using the Blogspot urls. No hosting is needed.
I went thru the Pains of upgrading to the New Blogger & that was certainly enuf to make ya wanna Switch*
However even tho all the “Pros + Geeks” use WordPress i don’t really like it - the basic Templates are Butt Ugly!
For straight outta the Box - up & running in less than Half n Hour for Newbie Bloggers with NO technical experience - Blogger is an excellent choice*
A lot of people use it too* So U feel yer part of a Larger community & also i think Folks starting out wanna choose a Horse like Blogger cuz they know Google is gonna be there down the Stretch!!
Cheers Everybody! Billy ;))
Peace*
Sorry to say that this is, I feel, another cheap shot at Blogger thanks to a misleading title. The linked story mentions that many, many Blogger blogs are used for nothing more than spamming (”splogs”). That’s a great reason for why people should not READ Blogger blogs, but offers no insight as to why they should not WRITE Blogger blogs. I maintained a perfectly legitimate personal blog on Blogger for over a year and was never aware of any security or spam issues regarding my site.
You seem rather put off by Blogger. I too outgrew my Blogger blog due to its less-than-robust featureset and the sloppy transition to the new version late last year, but I myself would not issue a blanket statement saying that Blogger is not the right solution for anyone. I loved it as a beginner but grew out of it when I became serious. I certainly wouldn’t recommend to someone new to blogging that they purchase a domain name and web host when they could test the waters for free.
Eh, can’t see anyway that title could be misleading there Brian…
Blogger as a tool is average, but it’s not the tool so much as how it’s run. Spammers love it and have for a very long time, and Google really does nothing but watch it grow.
Even much of the general public knows Blogspot = Spam, why would you ever want your blog in a place like that?
It’s hard enough being a successful blogger without using a service that’s a known spam haven.
Is there any way to move my whole blog out? I am definitely not a spam blog, but will lose 6 months of blogging if I start again.
I felt your title was inaccurate, if not misleading, because it doesn’t really represent the conclusion of the article you linked. It may be true, and in my opinion it is, but it doesn’t really seem relevant in this context. It may be a little more troublesome but there’s nothing standing in the way of someone intending to make a legitimate, successful blog on the Blogger platform.
The main issues I have with Blogger is the modest inventory of templates, no timestamping capability, and no built-in categories like Wordpress. Other than that, I’ve been somewhat content with it. The posting do seem to get indexed fairly quickly.

I run a few different blogs, one happens to be a corporate blog at the company I work for. I was new to blogging at that point and only wanted to try something out and got on blogger. I now feel as if I am stuck on it. Meaning I have this coporate blog that does get traffic, comments etc, heck it even has some really good rankings for odd keywords I never would have expected. Its ok, but I really wish I had it hosted on the primary domain for the company. I am not a big fan of Blogger these days.
Of course PC magazine would say blogger is bad. If you have been reading their articles for years now you will notice that that PC Magazine is somewhat Microsoft biased.
I even wonder if some of their columnist are on Microsoft’s payroll.
Given that Wordpress.org seems to have alot better filters to prevent this, its no wonder that the spammy blogspot blogs in the search engine results are showing up less and less each day, and being replaced by legitimate wordpress blogs. Blogsplot has become a bad neighborhood, with no policing or punishment for the bad actors.
