Google Loves the Mac!
For the longest time, Google has been more or less a PC-only platform, in terms of the client-based software that it has been releasing to the public. It’s not that Google doesn’t like to deal with people using Linux or Mac OS X, but most of its software packages have been aimed at PC users. Take for instance Google Talk. You can use it with any IM client, but you can only use the VoIP features if you’re using the GTalk client.
The launch of Google’s Mac Blog signaled Google’s commitment to serving as much of the world’s computing population as possible, regardless of platform. That’s in their mission statement, after all.
Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.
While the Mac is, indeed, in the minority in terms of market share, Mac users and lovers are passionate and influential enough to merit attention. And Google knows this.
So what has Google’s love for the Mac brought the world? For now, there is still a limited set of Google-made client software for the Mac. There’s Google notifier, which will alert users of new gmail messages and calendar events. Then there’s the Google Dashboard Widget, for easy Blogger blog posting, gmail checking and search history checkup. There are also Mac OS X versions of the Picasa albums, Google toolbar for Firefox and Google Earth.
Still, Google’s commitment to the Mac goes far beyond software for download. Google has been in attendance to Apple-related expos and conferences, such as the recent Mac Expo UK. This added visibility means Google will be more in touch with the needs and wants of the Apple community.
