Most Popular Words On Google

Now here’s yet another Google popularity contest. Remember we talked about “Googleshare” earlier, where the number of results on a Google search can be used as a proxy for popularity?

By the way, we checked recently, and Google seems to be as popular as Yahoo! with each having about 1.6 Billion results on Google.

While it’s a cool tool to use for comparing companies, products and even people for popularity, you can also use this as a proxy for determining which words, phrases or sentences are most used online.

For instance, comparing “the,” “a,” and “and,” we determine that “a” is most popular, with 18.7 Billion results, followed by “the” with 14.4 Billion and then “and” with 13.3 Billion.

Of course, we still have not considered using other oft-used words, but it would be fun to find out, wouldn’t it?

It’s even more fun to compare the popularity of phrases and sentences, particularly those that are considered to be popular.

Clark Gable’s “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn,” on Gone With the Wind seems to be more popular (700,000 results) than Marlon Brando’s “I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse,” from the Godfather (19,000 results only!). This, considering the two were voted as the most memorable movie lines–number one and number two respectively–by the American Film Institute in 2005. However, take note that Star Wars‘ “May the Force be with you,” gets 1.2 Million results! Maybe the AFI should have used Google to determine which was most popular.

If you want to do some Google games, you can compete with friends for the most popular sentences, limiting yourselves to certain word counts. For instance, the most popular six-word sentences, according to somethinkodd.com are the following:

  • “Your browser doesn’t support them.” (11.6 Million)
  • “Email this page to a friend.” (45 Million)

If you can find something more popular than that, then you’re great!
