Google Talk - the VoIP Protocol of Choice for Nokia

Here’s the latest from Google Talkabout, Google’s official blog for GTalk. Nokia has announced that its upcoming 770 Internet tablet (which works over WiFi and other cellular-based networks) will incorporate Google Talk built-in. This is truly an innovative development, and probably a good precedent for a mobile phone/device company. They’re practically reinventing their whole business model, which might mean they’re starting to lean away from the traditional cellular architecture into open ones.

Let’s just hope Nokia doesn’t alienate their partner cellular firms in the process. Imagine being able to bypass the cellular network by calling and messaging instead in Google Talk (or any other VoIP and IM network, for that matter). The keyword here is free, and we’re thinking there are possibilities for reasonable revenue streams here (such as targeted and/or contextual advertisements like AdSense).

More on Google Talk

We recently stumbled upon the GTalk suggest page. This page is basically a survey that asks users what new features (or changes) they want from Google Talk. Really, GTalk is still very much the spartan affair. There’s not decent presence notification system, nor can you chat with more than one person at a time. A live VoIP conference would be cool, don’t you think? And wouldn’t it be great if you could also call regular landlines and mobile phones a-la SkypeOut?

So check out the suggest page and tick your preferrred feature add-ons, which may include the following:

Personalization

  • Rich text for outgoing chats
  • Additional smilies or emoticons
  • User profiles
  • Friend groups

Communication

  • Multi-user chats
  • Conference calls
  • Voicemail
  • Video conferencing
  • File sharing or transferring

Additional functionalities

  • Offline message delivery
  • Mac or Linux versions
  • Call and message encryption
  • Calls to landlines
  • Notification when friends come online
