Google Roundup: What’s New This Past Week?
Posted to: Deskbar, Desktop Search, Gmail, Google
It’s exciting times again for Google, as new features and sevices had been announced in the past few days.
First, there’s the new sound notification in GMail +Talk. The lack of audio alerts with GMail’s internal chat client has turned off people, who had opted to stick with the standalone Google Talk client. But of course, switching machines (say, if you’re using public terminals) is always a problem. GMail +Talk was supposed to have solved this by giving a web-accessible means to chat with GTalk contacts. Problem, though, is that you’d have to check the Gmail window (or the chat session window) every now and then to see if there are new messages. Now, with Flash doing the sound alerts, you won’t have any missed messages.
Then, there are the four new features: Trends (discussed earlier), Co-op, Desktop 4, and Notebook.
Google Trends is a tool that lets users track and/or compare search and news volume of one to five keywords or phrases through time. It’s also a good tool for use by search engine optimizers and marketers.
Google Co-op is a service that lets users tag or label websites according to topic, for easier reference by other users searching information on similar topics.
Google Desktop 4 is an update to the sometime-controversial desktop search tool, which not features “Google Gadgets” (Google’s own “widgets”) that lets users get bits of information straight from the web to their desktops.
Google Notebook, to be announced soon, will be an online clipping tool that lets users share their clips to the public or with friends.
We’ll explore these new tools in detail soon.
