Google to sport a new look

Google hasn’t had a major design change in the decade or so since it was first launched (as “Google Beta” of course). Lately, some rumours have been surfacing, speculating that Google is testing a new look for its homepage.

Jamesyu.org stumbles upon what is possibly a beta test of the new Google design, which appears as below:

You would notice that the prominent change is in the left sidebar, which contains what used to be right below the “Google” title (or “doodle”). There’s now a more compact feel to the Google search page, as the options are more accessible via the left bar.

Will Google go for a redesign? Time will tell (a few weeks, perhaps?). Feedback is mixed, at least judging from the comments on the jamesyu.org blog entry. Some like Google as it is, while others are in favor of a more compact design, which saves on space.
