Sending Gmail to your Mobile Phone

Did you know you can have Gmail forward your new mail to your mobile phone? It’s very simple, and takes just minutes to set up. Don’t want all your email sent? Apply a filter to what you send.

To get started, go to your Google Settings page and click on Forwarding and Pop. Here you tell Google where to forward your email. The normal use of this field is to forward email to another email address. Well, each phone capable of text-messaging actually has an “email address” to which you can send a message. It is the 10digitphonenumber@service-provider-text-messaging-domain. Each service provider has it’s own domain name for this. For example, Verizon’s is vtext.com. So, you’d set your forwarding to 10digitphonenumber@Vext.com, as in this screen capture:
Gmail Forwarding to Phone

You can filter your email before it is sent. You can filter out mail, or filter in mail. Click on the Filter link to build what you need. It’s pretty easy to follow.

This forwarding is probably not something you would want to use all the time, unless you get very little email, but I could see where it would be good for special situations. You could turn it on when you go away from your computer for an extended period are don’t want to miss an email. You could set it up to deliver mail from just family or certain friends. Or, as I was just thinking as I was writing this, I could set it to deliver only stock buy/sell alerts all the time, to make sure I don’t miss anything important.

As you were reading this, you probably already realized that you can do this with any email program that allows forwarding.

Here is a list of the text messaging addresses for common US wireless providers:

    Verizon: 10digitphonenumber@vtext.com
    AT&T: 10digitphonenumber@mobile.att.net
    Sprint: 10digitphonenumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com
    T-Mobile: 10digitphonenumber@tmomail.net
    Nextel: 10digitphonenumber@messaging.nextel.com
    Cingular: 10digitphonenumber@mobile.mycingular.com
    Virgin Mobile: 10digitphonenumber@vmobl.com
    Alltel: 10digitphonenumber@alltelmessage.com OR message.alltel.com
    CellularOne: 10digitphonenumber@mobile.celloneusa.com
    Omnipoint: 10digitphonenumber@omnipointpcs.com
    Qwest: 10digitphonenumber@qwestmp.com

And if your from Canada, you can do:

    10digitphonenumber@txt.bell.ca
    10digitphonenumber@pcs.rogers.com
    10digitphonenumber@msg.telus.com

I am sure there are others, but those are the ones I know.

  2. Shlomoon 28 Mar 2005 at 11:40 am

I have been doing that for a few months now. There is only one little problem. If you forward ALL mail, when someone sends you a very large message, your mobile provider might bounce an email back to Google which will turn off forwarding until you go in and set it again.

  3. derekon 30 Mar 2005 at 12:52 pm

You should point out that some users - who do not have full email/mms capability - will not receive the full email message that is forwarded to their phones email address. e.g. on tmobile, if i forward mail to mynumber@tmomail.net the email is received as a text message which is limited to 160 characters. this email forwarding would work best for people who have a data plan with their voice plans which provide a real email address which can receive whole messages.

you can filter some mail to be forwarded to the mobile, yes, but you can’t filter some mail NOT to be forwarded — i.e. in order to have forwarded ALL mail with a few exceptions.

    it is a pity.

could we nicely ask google for an option to forward only the subget of the email ??

without body and attachments, then in your mobile account you will receibe only and empty email but with the person who send you and the topic, exactly what you get in the sms

Sueños transitables : Vodafone, amena y moviestar tiene tambien esta opcion de recibir como sms el topic de un mensaje mandado a tu numero@proveedor.com

    dsjkvf says:

    it is a pity.

You can do this. If you put the filter term in curly brackets {} with a minus sign before it, the filter will exclude everything with that term. For example, to create a filter which forwards everything except e.g. mails from Yahoo Groups, put this in the ‘To:’ box:

    -{@yahoogroups.com}

    En Movistar Epaña tambien funciona.

Any number @teleflip.com should work too, that’s what I had been using until I read this. So if you can’t get your number working with your providers official email address (or they don’t have one), try it @teleflip.com… I haven’t received any spam or anything after using them for aprox. 6 months.

I love being able to do this, it has some great applications. For instance, my high school has email alerts for school closings that you can subscribe to by email. I just filter gmail to send anything from their address to my cell phone, and in the winter time I usually find out about closings before my mom does, and she works in the district! Great stuff.

So I set this up for my cell on telus.com in Canada. I can forward an email to my cell just fine if I do it myself. But using the auto-forward, it does not do it. No errors, just nothing received. It works when I auto-forward it to another normal email address of mine.

Has anyone got ANY idea what the problem might be?

I’ve been forwarding to vtext, com (Verizon) since Nov 2004. But it only works 90% of the time. As failures accumulate I have to reset gmail.

Now, in the last four weeks, it’s much worse. Half of the forwarded mail fails to reach my phone. I reset gmail almost daily.

It’s not the length of the mail. I’ve forwarded bounced mail to the phone manually and it works.

    Any suggestions?

  40. Bozfordon 06 Aug 2005 at 7:22 am

I’ve been having problems forwarding through Exchange to VText as well. I suspect that they are checking for whether the sending server matches the domain it’s coming from. When the mail is automatically forwarded, it appears to come from the original sender (user@domainx.com), but the mail server is GMail’s so no match.

    Just a guess.
