Is Google Pulling the Deskbar in favor of the Toolbar?

NOTE: IT’S BACK UP AGAIN. I’LL KEEP THIS ENTRY UP FOR A LITTLE BIT OF THOSE WHO HAVE NOT READ THSI UPDATE.

One of my readers asked me why the Google Deskbar page (www.deskbar.google.com) was down so I checked it out. It wasn’t down for me, but when I clicked on it , it redirected me to the Google Toolbar page! Then I tried going to the Google Deskbar Help page (www.deskbar.google.com/help/) and it said “The requested URL was not found on this server.” Hmmmmm…….

Now I’m getting suspicious. So, I then went to the Google Downloads page and the link was still there to download the Google Deskbar. But, it was a broken link too. I clicked over to the Google Help Center and low and behold, I found no help page for the Google Deskbar listed.

Something is up.

It looks to me like they could be dropping the Deskbar in favor of the Toolbar. I sure hope not since I love the unobtrusiveness of the Deskbar over the Toolbar. And, I just wrote an article on it, and put a section in my manual about it!

Let’s hope it’s just a temporary quirk.

    Looks like the site is back up at deskbar.google.com, and the download link works. Another link for it is at http://toolbar.google.com/deskbar/index.html

    Also, thank you for starting this blog/resource site. It is exactly what is needed.

    Thanks for the update. Glad to see it back. I didn’t want to lose the deskbar.

    I’ll leave the blog entry up for a few days so everyone can see that it’s up again.

    The deskbar is now included in the Desktop search appliance as well as the new floating deskbar.
