Some Prodding to Get you to Open your Gmail Account Today
All signs point to an imminent official launch of still-in-beta Google Gmail. One-in-twenty random users are now being offered Gmail accounts on their Google homepage, and the number of invites available to Gmail users has skyrocketed. And, Marissa Mayer, Google’s director of consumer Web products, just said “we’ll be ramping it up over the next couple of weeks.”
With several sources available to get an invite, if you are not one of the lucky random users I say it’s time to open an account if you haven’t already done so. Even if you have no intention of using it now, you should take this opportunity to reserve the name you want while you still may be able.
Given all this, I thought I’d just take a moment to provide a few links to people that still might need some prodding to open their Gmail account. Google has a nice animated, Flash tour that will give you a good visual on Gmail’s features. The Google Gmail Help Center has lots of good FAQ’s that might answer any of your initial questions. And, there is always the Gmail Help Google Group, where you can see what Gmail users are talking about and where you can ask your own questions.
TIP! If you are a happy user of another webmail service like Yahoo Mail or HotMail, here’s one reason to have a Google account: Google’s archiving, labeling, search function and storage limit (1 GB) is superior. So, use it for archival! Simply go into your current webmail account settings and tell it to forward a copy of every message to your Google account. You can continue to use your current web client and use Google for archival. And, someday, if and when you decide to make the switch, you old messages are there already. Note: not all webmail providers allow forwarding and some require you to be a paying member; check with your service.

There also is a hack in which you can make your gmail a drive on your computer. I haven’t done it but I heard it is rather slow - not that I would have expected it to be fast.
Thanks for the tip Jarsen. I published it today — you can see it at: http://www.googletutor.com/?p=72
