Google Offering Gmail Randomly without Invitations now!
It seems that Google is moving past the requirement that an invitation is necessary to create an account on Gmail! Random users are reporting that on the their Google page there is now a link that says, “New! Get Gmail.” Following that link will bring you to a page that says:

Absolutely. As we make room for more Gmail users, we want to first extend invitations to Google users. We’re still working to make Gmail better, so for now, we’re just inviting a small number at random. Looks like that’s you! We’re really excited to share Gmail with you and we hope you like it. How do I get started?
It’s easy. Just create an account below. If you already use a Google Account to sign in to Google Groups, News, Answers, Web API, or Google in Your Language, you can click here to add Gmail access to your existing account.

I saw that at school, but the filter blocked the sign up.
